M14 - Discuss: Interview Practice (Partners) (Discussion)

  Discuss: Interview Practice

*Note: This discussion has been converted to a Canvas page to facilitate viewing in this public course

Overview

The final portion of this course is focusing on the types of communication that are probably the most important for your future career: those types of communication that get you a job. Namely application (cover) letters, resumes, and interviews. You will get practice on cover letters and resumes in other courses during your time in the School of Aviation Sciences at UVU. For this assignment, you will practice the (hopefully) final piece of the puzzle when it comes to getting a job, the interview.

Guidelines

For this assignment you will be paired with another student in the class, and you will take turns interviewing each other. This project will be broken into essentially three phases. See instructions below for details.

Instructions

Phase 1

  • Go out and find a job listing online that you would be interested in applying for. This does not have to be a job that you are currently qualified for. Any job that interests you is fine. Once you have found that job listing, save the details, including a link to that job listing.

Phase 2

  • The class will be divided into pairs of two. Once you have been notified that you have a partner for this project, you will need to coordinate with your partner to meet over Microsoft Teams. You must meet virtually with your partner! You can not simply trade emails with the questions! The purpose of this assignment is to practice answering and asking questions like in an actual interview, something you cannot due in an email.
  • Once you have coordinated a meeting time, send your partner the details of the job listing you found, including the actual link to the job listing. This is critically important!
  • You will need to record the Microsoft Teams meeting between you and your partner. You will have to upload a copy of this recording to the questionnaire at the end of this project, so this is critical! Not providing a recording of your interview session will hurt your grade for this project.
  • As part of this project, you will act as both an interviewer for the other student’s job, and a person seeking the job you found. Once you meet with your partner, you will take turns, one person acting as the job seeker for the job they found, while you act as the interviewer for that job. Then you will interview for the job you found, with the other student acting as the interviewer.
  • When interviewing the other student for the job, utilize the common interview questions found within the book (Chapter 19, page 567). You must ask at least 10 of these common questions during your “interview” of the other student, taking at least one question from each category.
  • Take notes on how both you and the other student did during each part of the process (interviewer and job seeker). Take some notes on what you and the other student did well, and what could have been improved.
  • Discuss with each other your thoughts on the process, and what you could have done to improve, both when asking questions and answering them. Please make sure that any feedback you give is constructive. Any derogatory or otherwise hurtful feedback shouldn’t be used, and will not be acceptable during this project.

Phase 3

  • Complete the assignment questionnaire for this project. Note: this will be a separate quiz in Canvas later. Keep your job posting link bookmarked as you will need it in this phase. Also, don't forget your recording of your meeting, as you will needed it for the separate assignment as well!
  • Post to this discussion, in which you talk about your experience with the interview practices, as well as some  interview tips for other students. Complete the discussion assignment by following the instructions below.

Instructions (for this discussion)

Complete this assignment by doing the following:

  1. In a post by Wednesday:
    • Post your thoughts on how the interview sessions went. Feel free to discuss your own performance during the session. If you discuss the other student's performance, be sure to keep your comments about the other student anonymous and any criticism constructive. Any derogatory or otherwise hurtful feedback shouldn’t be used, and will not be acceptable during this project.
    • What are some tips you might have for the other students when it comes to interviewing? Suggest a couple of tips, ether things that have worked for you in the past when interviewing for a job, or tips you have heard about working.
    • Include some general thoughts you have about interviewing for a job, especially in the aviation world.
  2. By Sunday respond to at least two additional posts. Please respond to posts that do not have replies first. If all posts have a reply, then you can choose which one to respond to.
    • Your feedback should be thoughtful, substantive, and respectful, and should reflect your own exploration of the topic under discussion as well as trying to understand others' ideas. Provide feedback on their conclusions and encourage them to continue their research. Present examples of what you are doing to learn more.

References

No references are required for this assignment. However, you will need to provide a link to the job listing that you chose, and your Microsoft Teams Recording, for this project when completing the questionnaire in the separate assignment.
