FINAL: Timeline Project Overview (MUSC-1236_David Baker) | Julie Swindler

Why we are including this example

   Final Timeline Project

Purpose

Throughout the semester you will study jazz history and build a timeline showing significant eras, events, places, and people. You will review a brief breakdown of jazz history, examine the structure of a jazz performance, and watch videos on specific eras, people, places, and events. You will be given specific items to add to your timeline, and you will add things that feel most impactful from your perspective. This project allows you to demonstrate that you understand the basic timeline of jazz history and can identify what, to you, is most significant in its development.

Task

Instead of a final exam, you will complete a Final Timeline Project in which you will create a timeline of jazz history, including significant eras, events, places, and people.

Format

You can choose the format for your timeline. I recommend reviewing the Format of Choice Guide.

Timeline Entries

You will be given specific, required entries, and you will also add events of your own choosing. For each one of the events of your choice, you must include a minimum of 2-3 sentences, describing its importance to the timeline of jazz history with relevant supporting information.

Three Major Pieces

There are three significant pieces to this project:

  1. Note-taking method: Choose how you want to keep track of the dates and other items to include in the timeline. Add required items and other items of your choice to your notes throughout the semester (you'll demonstrate accountability for this through a quiz).

    1. There will be 10 accountability quizzes throughout the semester, listing the items you need to add to your timeline and asking if you've added those things to your notes and bibliography.

  2. Bibliography: Keep track of your sources. You will need to submit a bibliography with your timeline at the end of the semester. You are expected to include at least 27 citations within the timeline and a minimum of 12 references in the bibliography. (Multiple citations may come from the same reference; hence the 27 citations and 12 references.)

    1. There will be 2 bibliography checks throughout the semester. The first one will be to check the format you've chosen for your entries. The second one will be to see if you're keeping up on your entries and if they are formatted consistently.

  3. Timeline format: Explore different ways to create your timeline and choose the method you like best. The Format of Choice Guide can give you some ideas.

    1. You will submit your chosen format about halfway through the semester. Then, near the end of the semester, you will submit a rough draft of the timeline for review. Be sure you implement the meaningful feedback you get on your rough draft. You will submit the final timeline the last week of the semester instead of a final exam.

Milestone Assignments

As we move through the course, there will be Final Project Milestone assignments to help keep you on track. Be sure you complete each one. You will submit your Final Project Timeline in Module 15 in place of a Final Exam.
