Overview about POGILs:
POGIL: POGIL stands for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning. POGIL activity consists of students working in small self-managed groups on inquiry materials. During POGIL activity you will work in group of 6 (always the same group – formed by CATME) and fill up a POGIL form which consists of a list of 4 questions. Each person of the same group has the same grade. Since it’s a team effort, educated manner requests head’s up of absence by email to your group member and me as cc if you can’t participate.
- TASK
You will work in collaboration with your group to fill the following POGIL form and submit it by Thursday midnight of this week. Only one person submits the form for the group. (I will provide feedback to this person only, so this person is responsible to share my comments to the rest of the group).

You are free to organize your group work as it appears the most effective to you and your group members. Nonetheless, as default you could consider the following suggestion to organize your group work.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- At the exception of guidance 5, you are not required to follow guidance 1 to 4. You are only required to submit your POGIL form on time in Canvas.
- If you are 100% sure group work if not for you, you can then choose to work on your own. Let me know by email during the first 2 weeks of the semester.
- Group should be kept the same during the semester, nonetheless, in case of irreconcilable differences you can opt to drop out of a group and finish the semester on your own. In this situation, you should let me know no later than the end of February.
You can use the guidance as source of inspiration to design your own group organization or alter them in ways that fit your needs better. If you identify flaws and/or improvements in the proposed guidance, please provide feedbacks in the two surveys about group work that will happen in the middle and the end of the semester.
You were placed in a group by the Program CATME that follows sophisticated algorithms to form the most efficient group. Once the group is formed then it is time to work together. Find below a list of five guidance to facilitate your collaboration with your peers:
Guidance 1- Have a manager with clear responsibilities (not mandatory):
- Each week you are going to have a manager.
- The manager chose a time to meet each week. Use the online tool ‘when is good’ to arrange a time that fit everybody’s’ schedule – link to the website: https://whenisgood.net Links to an external site.. You will have to create a login. if you have trouble setting-up the tool there is a nice short video tutorial in the same link. You can meet at the same time slot each week.
- The manager will make sure that everyone has access to the POGIL document, that everyone has access to the MS Teams channel, that everyone knows how they are communicating, that everyone knows and meet the deadline for individual work and group meetings.
- The first manager can be the person who lives the farther from UVU.
- Manager has to change each week.
- Second manager is decided by alphabetic order and so on.
- The manager assigns group members’ responsibilities for the week. The manager has to make sure that the group members’ responsibilities rotate each week.
- The manager has the responsibility to make decision when it comes to POGIL's answers.
- The manager has final word for a week. Enjoy it!
Guidance 2 – Group member’s roles (not mandatory):
- Each member of the group has one role over the week. The roles are described below.
- MANAGER – see above section Guidance 1.
- MODERATOR – the moderator guides the discussion making sure that everyone knows the questions, that everyone has a voice in the discussion (not just one or two people are taking over the discussion), and that everyone comes to a consensus on the answers.
- RECORDER – the recorder is responsible for recording the weekly MS Teams meeting. The recorder also sorts the document and makes sure that the answers are recorded after everyone comes to a consensus, that the document is saved and make sure that the document is submitted for grading and feedback. To be clear, only this recorder submits the POGIL form on Canvas.
- CONTRIBUTORS – the other members of the group provide discussions and contents that contribute to enhance the accuracy and the quality of the work.
- Group members’ roles should rotate each week like the manager role. The manager is in charge of the rotation of the roles.
Guidance 3 - Plan of the Week (not mandatory):
- Work individually on the POGIL assignment (Monday and/or Tuesday).
- Manager set up and confirm a time for the weekly meeting (Monday or Tuesday).
- Each group member posts its individual work on the MS Teams group channel (Tuesday and/or Wednesday).
- Meet using MS Teams available in Canvas to review and agree on the answers as a team. The recorder records the meeting and compiles the best answers in the POGIL form (Wednesday or Thursday). This record will automatically appears in the group channel and will constitute the “memories” of your meeting for your own purpose (to take additional notes for example) and for my review.
- The recorder submits the POGIL before Thursday midnight on Canvas (see due date herein). See detail of acceptable documents below.
- I will review and provide feedbacks the week after – please contact the recorder of the week to obtain my feedbacks.
- I will post a video correction about the POGIL accessible in “Pages” on Canvas (over the weekend)
Guidance 4 - On the POGIL form (not mandatory):
- List name of all participants and their roles.
- Fill in with your answers. Homemade doodles, sketches, diagrams with appropriate legends are strongly recommended!
- Why recording students’ participation? To stimulate student’s investment in group assignments, each week the manager is going to record students’ contribution. Consequently, please devote times during the week for your team work. It is important for you and your teammates success.
- As a reminder, 25% of your grade depends upon group work. Also, your peers are going to evaluate your contributions and give you a grade (see grading scheme in the syllabus)!
- Finally, to maintain a record of who is contributing and who is not contributing in Group assignments (POGILs and Project), recorder, please list all names in the POGIL's form, on top of that: indicate YES next to the name if the person contributed and NO next to the name if the person did not contributed.
Guidance 5 - Peers’ and self-evaluation (MANDATORY):
- As an incentive to motivate your contribution to the group work, there are two peers-evaluation during the semester. Also, to invite you to reflect on your own participation and performance on the group progress, you are going to complete two self-evaluations during the semester.
- Please refer to the following document to get acquainted to the rubric to evaluate your peers and yourself during the semester.
- You will complete these peers’ and self-evaluation twice over the semester. The first one at the middle of the semester during week 8. The last one at the end of the semester during week 16.
- PURPOSE
POGILs are designed to deepen your understanding on the subject that was covered in the lecture video and reading of the week. POGILs will test your basic and fundamental knowledge as well as stimulate your capacity to solve real life problem that you might encounter in your future scientific career.
The other goal of POGILs is to develop your collaborative skills. Indeed, POGILs as well as the project are group assignments. Your ability to function in team will be a critical asset for your future career. Most of current job advertisements in life science require social skill.
- GRADING
10 points per POGIL, 6 POGILs over the semester, 3 highest scores will count toward your overall grade. I will post your best POGILs’ grade after every 3 POGILs/Debates.

I will examine and comment all your POGILs, nonetheless the 3 highest scores will count toward your overall grade. |
Acceptable formats for submission are the following:
- Pdf, doc, ppt, tiff, jpeg documents are accepted (see complete list herein).
- You can also take a picture of a hand writing paper with the answers with your cell phone. Make sure to you have the question number and the name of the group members on the paper. I like diagrams and schemas, so it might be the best and easiest option.
How to create and maintain a successful team:
Please watch the following video: Successful Team Links to an external site.
Create the Team Charter. The team charter must consist of
- The ground rules – Explain how you want your team to work. What will be the norm (standards, behaviors)? What are your expectations for attendance, equal sharing of work, decision-making, and giving feedback.
- Problem Solving - Explain how will you work out issues and problems that occur - a team conversation; identifying the source of the conflict; talking through the problem with the team; working out individual personality issues between members; agreeing on an improvement plan with deadlines. Address issues early rather than avoiding them. Make sure people know if their performance is lacking and give them a chance to address it.
- Consensus building – Explain how you will decide what the consensus is and when you will achieve consensus. Consensus is not the absence of disagreement. To come to consensus, everyone must state their own research. Then you will discuss each option. As you discuss, new options may emerge. Continue to discuss until you feel you have reached the answer. Decide together what that answer will be.
- Time Management – Explain how you will decide when the discussion will begin, and when the discussion will end. Explain when you plan on preparing the final decisions for submission and feedback
- Communication – Explain how and when you will communicate and collaborate. MS Teams channel is a private channel where you can meet and/or discuss the assignment. You will have access to each assignment at all time during the semester. If you have questions please contact me at sebastien.tauzin@uvu.edu
