 International Typographic Style and New York School

 

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Understand the philosophical underpinnings of the Swiss School of Design
  • Recognize the leaders and designers from this movement
  • Trace how the movement influenced design and spread across the world to become the International Typographic Style
  • Identify the differences between ITS and the New York School.  
  • Delineate the contributions of Cipe Pineles, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, and Alex Steinweiss to visual communication in the U.S. 

 

Overview

This week, you'll learn about one of the most influential movements of the 20th century, the International Typographic Style. It still influences the way we design and communicate information. You'll also learn about the New York School, which was not a literal school, but a different way to approach design that in most ways contrasted with the International Typographic Style.
