Hopefully you are ready for an online adventure as we navigate through design history. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. My contact information is on the syllabus.

Class Communication

I will use Announcements in Canvas for additional tidbits (like videos or articles I've found). I'll also use it to clarify assignments or to remind you about things. If you don't check your UVU email, please set it up to forward to whatever email do you check. Also, if I communicate directly with you, it will be through the messaging system in Canvas.

Problems with Canvas?

If you are having problems with Canvas, you can get live help from UVU Links to an external site. Monday - Friday 8 am to 8 pm. For help from Instructure (who makes Canvas), you can contact them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just click on the "Live HelpLinks to an external site." link in the green navigation bar on the left.

What is Jim like in real life?

If you watch the videos, you'll see that I talk with my hands a lot. You'll also think that I wear the same shirt to class almost every time : ) I love graphic design and I love typography. Before I started teaching at UVU, I was an art director and creative director at two advertising firms, one in Salt Lake and another in Billings, Montana. More recently, I've spent a lot of time designing posters that I sell on online. To see the posters, you can log onto my web site: jimgodfrey.com (Links to an external site.)

In real life I am generally positive and upbeat. I am not a talker, unless you want to talk about design or the Jazz, RSL or the Pirates and Steelers (I lived in Pittsburgh for a few years when I was a kid). In fact, the first time I remember being conscious of typography was trying to redraw the letter "P" in the Pirates' logo. In my spare time I enjoy mountain biking, playing tennis and basketball and hanging out with my wife and kids, some of whom are college students!
