Welcome Statement
Welcome to Psychopharmacology PSY 3430. My name is Claudia Jorgensen, but will usually just use Dr. J. I am originally from Germany (specifically, I grew up in former East Germany). After high school, I moved to the States and have lived in the States ever since.
Education and Experience
I received my Associate's Degrees in Liberal Arts and Early Childhood Development from Oakland Community College in Michigan. I received my Bachelor's degrees in Research Psychology and Biology from the University of Michigan--Flint. For my graduate work, I moved to Florida where I received my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Florida State University. My graduate work focused on the social environmental factors that influence adult neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons in adulthood) in the limbic system (social part of the brain) in the prairie vole.
I came to UVU in 2013 to teach Psychopharmacology and Physiological Psychology. Since starting at UVU, I have developed Introduction to Brain and Behavior and Sensation & Perception as well as converted Physiological Psychology to a lab course (now called Behavioral Neuroscience). Furthermore, I have developed an interactive online delivery for Behavioral Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology. My focus and excellence in teaching have been recognized with the Dean's Excellence in teaching Award (2018), being named an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA, 2018), the Faculty Excellence Award (FEA, 2019), the international JoVE Innovation in Teaching Award (2021), the Flex Teaching Award (2022), and being nominated for the UVU Presidential Award of Excellence.
