Items of Note

This course was developed with Instructional Designers Janel Mitchell and Daina Romney to help students explore potential health professions they might be interested in pursuing as a career.

Early modules prime students for the various options and requirements of health professions in the United States. Students add themselves to one of five specific health professions to explore, interview someone in that line of work, create a PowerPoint video presentation, and share in a discussion what they learn. These presentations are spread over the semester and correspond to specific course modules.

While students are free to ask any questions of the interviewee they wish, the following is a list of ideas to get them thinking:

  1. What are the educational requirements for this profession?
  2. What made you decide to go into this profession?
  3. Does this position require any certifications or licensure?
  4. What does a typical day look like in this profession?
  5. What are the pros and cons of this profession?
  6. Are there any stories from your career you would be willing to share?
  7. What advice do you have for people considering this profession?
  8. Are there any resources you would recommend when looking into this profession?

Students are directed to view all the student career exploration PowerPoint video presentations and respond to at least 3 using the following prompts:

  • What is your biggest takeaway?
  • Do your skills and interests align with this career?
  • Would this career align with your values?
  • Is this a career you would consider?
  • Are there opportunities for advancement within this career path?
  • Do you have additional questions about this career? If so, where could you go to answer those questions?

In this way, students get a feel for a wide variety of healthcare professions.
