  Welcome Statement

Hello and welcome to TECH 6700 Data Driven Decision Making. Managers in technical fields are often faced with complex decisions involving many aspects of business, technology, employees/partners, and customers. A technical manager must be able to see the many facets of a decision, assess relevant data, and make and communicate a proper decision supported by the facts. This course is designed to give you experience making data driven decisions using data and tools relevant to you.

I am excited to be with you in this course. As graduate students, my role is to mentor and coach you through the process and point you to resources and information. I look forward to working with you throughout the semester. Should you have questions or comments at any time, please reach out to me.

 Education and Experience

I am a Professional in Residence and faculty member in the Department of Technology Management. I joined Utah Valley University in 2016 after working 27 years in the high-tech computer and electronics industries. I worked 23 years at HP Inc. leading engineering development teams to design new printing technologies and printing systems. Prior to moving to Utah, I lived in Barcelona, Spain managing inkjet product development for HP's operation there.

I have Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Statistics from Brigham Young University and three decades of experience in the electronics industry. I strive to bring real world examples to help in-class learning.

I am passionate about learning and am interested in all types of technology and the social and ethical issues arising from them. I am especially fascinated by how unrelated technologies come together in unexpected ways to change our lives.

I respect and appreciate cultural differences.  I enjoy learning and experiencing culture in all its forms, though I would say trying new foods is my favorite cultural experience!

My wife, Kate, and I have three grown children who are now beginning families of their own. We love the title of "grandparents" and enjoy spending time with our family. We enjoy travel, exploring the outdoors, biking, running/walking, gardening, and reading a good book.

I look forward to a great semester together. If there is anything I can do to help you succeed, please contact me.

Sincerely,

-Kyle Merrill
