Module 3: Watch | Guest Presentation – Kristina Olergard Tenney
Keep in mind: Some of the policies discussed in this course are part of ongoing and highly controversial debates, with legislation that is constantly changing (e.g., abortion, education curriculum, immigration, etc.). Please remember that the opinions you may read about in some linked articles and module content or hear from guest speakers when we discuss political topics are not necessarily representative of my own or UVU’s views. You are encouraged to have your own views and do not need to agree or disagree with the guest speakers.
In this module, you will watch a recorded presentation from a guest speaker, Kristina Olergard Tenney. She will discuss family policy in Sweden and explain differences between policy in some European countries compared to the United States.
Before watching her talk, I want you to spend a few minutes thinking about what you can learn from her and what you expect to hear in her presentation. Think about what you know about family policy in other places (e.g., paid parental leave) and what questions you might have. She typically provides a general overview of the demography, history, and political system in Sweden, what family policy looks like in Sweden (e.g., things that make Sweden 'family-friendly'), how the system there works, and reflections on her own experiences both in Sweden and in the United States. She will discuss parental leave, gender equality, benefits for children, education, healthcare, transportation, corporal punishment, care for the elderly and those with disabilities, and more.
