Meet Dr. Daren Nelson

  Instructor Information

Hello, this is Dr. Daren Nelson. I am in my 3rd year of teaching at UVU and am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Science. Prior to teaching at UVU I was a Professor for 6 years in the Earth Science Department at the University of North Carolina in Pembroke, and a Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University - Idaho, Montana State University, and the University of Memphis. I am originally from southeastern Idaho and received my B.S. in Geology from Utah State University, my Master's degree is in Hydrology from the University of Idaho, and my Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Utah.

I have a four-tiered focus in my research and teaching interests.  I study (1) hydrologic processes, specifically groundwater resources in the US (specifically, Idaho, Utah, and North Carolina), (2) geomorphic/hydrologic processes of ancient and modern lakes, such as Lake Bonneville and Utah Lake, (3) geoscience education, specifically virtual field and lab activities, and (4) teaching sustainable development.

On a more personal nature, I love the outdoors and usually try to go on a hike, canoeing, kayaking, or go camping as often as I can.   My wife and I have four kids and family is very important to me.  They are often with me when I am out exploring the world.  Maybe I will find you on the trails or the water someday.  If so say hello!

I hope that you come prepared to learn about how each of us impacts the environment around us, how we can change our lifestyles so that we can be more environmentally friendly, and how we can come prepared to think deeply regarding how you learn the information.  This course is specifically regarding the science behind being environmentally sustainable and managing our resources. I hope that we can all work together to make this class enjoyable for everyone.  I want to be as open and inviting as I possibly can so if you have any questions or concerns please set up an appointment to talk to me.
