  Welcome Statement

Welcome to FIN-4185! I'm excited to share with you some of my experiences with international trade and finance. Let me tell you how I got involved in international business.

I went on my first overseas adventure at the age of 27 with my wife and two small boys (ages 4 and 1) to Cairo Egypt.

I had no clue what I was doing or getting myself or my family into. It was difficult—going through cultural shock, the different languages and customs, and hating everything about Egypt and its people. But, eventually, I came to love everything Egypt had to offer. Learning about cultural differences and then embracing them changed me forever.

It turned out to be the best thing ever and started my overseas career and working and living internationally in the Middle East for over 20 years. I have lived in Cairo, Egypt, twice for over 7 years; Doha, Qatar for over 1-year; Saudi Arabia twice for over 7 years; and just over 4 years in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I had an office in Bahrain for 3 years too. I have traveled and conducted international business in the Middle East, in all the Asian, and in most European countries. It’s been a ride, good and bad. I hope to share more of that in the upcoming weeks in this class as we go through the topics.

My advice to you is to be open to change, to see the world as it is and not as you want it to be. Enjoy the learning, share experiences, and most of all, be yourself.
