Purpose

Apply principles of Notan, balanced use of positive and negative space, and a conceptual visual communication to a design. 

Assignment Learning Objectives

  • Apply Notan and compositionally balanced use of positive and negative space with shape to a design.  
  • Manipulate various types of shape to conceptualize a word using kinesthetic logic and visual abstraction.
  • Apply visual and gestalt principles to a design to create unity and variation.   
  • Demonstrate proper use of craft with paper, scissors, an x-acto knife, and glue.   
  • Critique and evaluate student work during class while using appropriate terminology.

Assignment Overview

This assignment is broken into two main parts. First, you will use your word and image associations to create four sketches, two sketches per word. From your sketches, you will create two collages that each reflect your opposite word using black and white paper.  

Task

There are 9 tasks to complete for this assignment.

  1. First, open your last research assignment and begin to think about how you would like to represent each word.
  2. Review the tabs below. 
  3. Submit Notan Sketches [Graded]: Create a total of four sketches in your sketchbook using graphite that use your images as inspiration. Complete two sketches per word. 
  4. Read my suggestions for improvements and make adjustments to your designs (as needed).
  5. Create two collages. Each collage must reflect one word. 
  6. Edit your photos for submission. [See demonstration in Course Media for more details]
  7. Submit Final Notan Collages [graded]: Submit edited photos of your collages. 
  8. Submit to Critique Discussion [graded]: Submit your final collages for critique. 
  9. Submit Reflection [Graded]: Complete and submit your reflection for this assignment.
