  Welcome Statement

Welcome to ARTH 2720! I'm excited to lead you through a history of art from the Renaissance to today.

The arts have been a part of my life for as far back as I can remember. Foreign and domestic travel always centers around visits to art museums and cultural events; when my friends were reading Harlequin Romances in junior high, I was reading Charles Dickens and Jane Austen; and my 80s music favorites are enjoyed alongside Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Handel.

It was while on a 6-month study abroad program to London that I gained a greater love for the art museums of Europe - the buildings themselves, the creak of the wooden floors as I passed between gallery rooms, and, of course, the power and beauty of the art displayed. Have you seen the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off where Cameron stands mesmerized in front of Seurat's painting in the Art Institute of Chicago? I have had similar experiences standing in front of numerous paintings, including Vermeer's View of Delft, Picasso's Guernica, and Rothko's large color field paintings. I have been teaching art history and humanities classes for the past 26 years, and I never tire of learning about the history, philosophy, science, politics, religion, psychology, etc. surrounding the creation of art. I received my Master's degree in art history from BYU and my PhD in the history of art from The University of York, England.

I love to travel and still have "cruise of Greek isles" on my bucket list. While I am trying to eat healthier, I am always a sucker for good Massaman curry and a fresh Boston cream-filled donut.

I hope that this semester you can find delight in some (if not all) of the art we will study. You don't have to be an art history major to enjoy the visual and emotional impact art can have on all of us.
