COMM 3570 Items of Note
Items of Note
This course was developed with Instructional Designers, Julie Swindler, Megan Bates, and Grace Thomas.
This module showcases how video can enhance course content and how discussions can give students the opportunity to apply what they are learning.
Video
- The first video, “Introduction and Course Orientation,” is clear and concise. You will note that Dr. Grecu explains how the course works, how the final project is set up, and how she will be pulling in her own experience to enhance learning. Her tone and affect are engaging and enthusiastic and make students feel comfortable.
- The second video, entitled “Career Corner,” is an example of how Dr. Grecu shares her industry experience as it relates to the specific concept students are studying that week. Sharing real-life stories like this shows students that what they are learning brings value to their future careers. There is a "Career Corner" in each module of the course.
Discussions
At the beginning of the course, Dr. Grecu introduces students to a specific set of discussions called “Battle of the Bubbly.” You will see the first discussion included in this module. Students are assigned to one of three different groups and respond to a hypothetical crisis using the concepts and principles they are learning throughout the semester. The scenario is relatable (soda companies) and realistic (a hot mic situation). In previous face-to-face courses, this was a favorite activity throughout the semester. We were able to convert it to an online discussion format that we feel will work equally well. Activities like these give students experience with real-life application.
