Zoonosis Presentation Overview
Submit
Introduction
As an environmental scientist, it's important to understand how diseases are spread. They can spread very fast, even becoming pandemics. Seventy to seventy five percent (70-75%) of emerging diseases are zoonotic, meaning most diseases we contract come from an animal.
Task
You will be assigned a group. Together, you will choose a specific zoonosis disease from a list to research and then create a presentation on your findings.
There are four significant pieces to this project:
1. Presentation with Notes and Bibliography
You will share your research in a 7-8 minute video presentation, posted in a Canvas discussion. Each presentation must include a PowerPoint deck, with thorough notes in each slide, and be delivered professionally (involving each group member). The recording must show each person presenting, not just the slide with a voice in the background. Do not simply read the slide.
You must include a bibliography with at least 5 reputable sources cited in APA format. You will post your video presentation and slide deck in a Canvas discussion.
Regarding the slides and slide notes: A slide should contain a brief, graphic representation of the topic, and the accompanying notes should include the details needed to flesh it out. Do not simply copy your notes to the slide. You and your peers will be using slide notes to study for a Small Party.
Topics you will cover in your presentation include the following as they relate to your selected zoonosis disease:
- History & background (discovery, where the virus first emerged, timeline, endemic or epidemic etc.)
- Science (genome size, nucleic acid, how infections occur, and life cycle)
- Disease (etiology, stages, symptoms/manifestations/unique characteristics)
- Vulnerable populations & why they are vulnerable
- Incidence & prevalence (statistics)
- Diagnosis
- Prevention (effectiveness of gov. programs in place to address concerns)
- Treatment or cure (how it works, effectiveness, controversy, how its administered, etc.)
See the Zoonosis Presentation Rubric for the grading criteria used by Professor Cadet.
2. Discussion
You will be responsible to know the information presented by each group. To help you engage with each other's presentations, you will respond to each presentation using the "I like/I wish/I wonder" format: something you liked about it, something you wish they'd included or changed, and something you still wonder about (i.e., a question). In addition to responding to others' videos, you will be responsible for responding to the comments and questions on your own presentation. Answering your peers' questions may require you to revisit your notes or research, which is another incentive to be thorough.
3. Multiple Choice Questions
For 20 points, each group will submit 10 well-written multiple-choice questions based on the presentation. Questions must be written in plant text format. They must include the correct answer, marked with an asterisk, and four incorrect answers. The last possible answer must be all of the above or none of the above. These questions will be used to create the zoonosis small party.
Use the example below as a format guide:
1. Which of the following is a common symptom of mad cow disease?
a. Rash
b. Warts
*c. Slurred speech
d. Uncontrollable urge to moo
e. None of the above
4. Small Party (Assessment)
After submitting your presentation, engaging in the discussion, and submitting your questions, you will take a small party (quiz) designed to test your knowledge of all the zoonosis diseases covered by the class. This small party with be timed, open note, and open book.
Milestones
Through the first half of the semester, you will have Zoonosis Milestone Assignments to help keep you on track. They are listed below alongside the week they are due.
- Week 1: Contact your group and sign up for a zoonosis disease
- Week 3: Submit a draft of your bibliography
- Week 6: Submit an outline of your presentation
- Week 7: Submit your completed PowerPoint slides
- Week 8: Submit your 7-8 minute recorded presentation and 10 multiple choice questions
- Week 9: Participate in the Zoonosis discussion and complete the small party
