Module 2: Before Class Discuss - Introduce Yourself
*Note: This discussion has been converted to a Canvas page to facilitate viewing in this public course
Purpose
The purpose of is activity is to set you up for success in this class by enabling you to get to know your classmates through video recordings. In your classes, you will occasionally need to make recordings on your computer. We would like to introduce you to a few ways you can do that. Also, learning more about each other will help us building a strong community of leaners.
Instructions
This is our first class discussion. I recommend you post early so you will have time to engage with at least TWO (2) of your classmates' posts and so they will have time to engage with you.
- Watch the video "Why city flags may be the worst designed thing you have ever noticed," by Roman Mars
- This video is around 18 minutes but it doesn't seem that long
- Create your own personal flag using the criteria Mars lays out in the video you watched above.
- Make sure you:
- Follow the criteria of a good flag.
- Depict yourself accurately. Maybe include.....
- Where do you come from?
- What are your values?
- Why are you here at UVU?
- Info about your family and how that impacts you.
- What makes you different from everyone else?
- These are just a few ideas - be creative, have fun!
- Just make sure your flag tells us about you clearly.
- Make sure you:
-
Record a 60 to 90 second video introducing yourself to your classmates by sharing your flag with them. Sharing how your flag represents who you are. If you need assistance on how to create a video and to attach it to this discussion, refer to the the Video Tutorials page.
-
Post the video to this discussion.
-
Watch your classmates' videos and comment on at least 2 other videos of people with whom you have something in common or you felt compelled to respond to based on their flag. Ask follow-up questions, identify commonalities, or otherwise connect with each other. We hope you view our discussions as a way to demonstrate critical thinking, be inclusive, and learn from each other.
