  Welcome Statement

Welcome to ESMG 4500 - I am here as a facilitator to help you navigate through this Emergency Management Course successfully.

I hold to a learning community philosophy. By learning together we learn better. This means learning from each other. In addition to the information I impart, you will learn from opening up and sharing information in weekly online discussions. Also, you will share what you are reading through reading summaries and get other student feedback. Finally, you will have the opportunity to review some of the assignments of other students and share your insights.

I hope you will find this course extremely interesting.  I hope it is one of the best courses you take while at UVU.  It can only be that good if both you and I are committed to the learning process. I promise you I will do my best to make this an enjoyable and productive experience. One way I can do this is to be accessible to you when you need me.  Please don't hesitate to email me, call me or drop by my office (if you are in Provo). I'd like to get to know you personally.

As a professor I have worked in the capacity of teaching Emergency Management programs as well as for 20 years I directed and was the Program Coordinator for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs for the College of Aviation and Public Services. Along with EMT & Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) courses I also teach other Emergency Medical Services (EMS) related courses for Utah Fire and Rescue Academy (UFRA) and UVU throughout the year.

These courses include:

• Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS)

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

• Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

• Pediatric Emergencies for Pre hospital Providers (PEPP)

• Geriatric Emergency Medical Service (GEMS)

• International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)

• Wilderness Medicine.

During my tenure myself, adjuncts, and students created Utah Valley Emergency Response Team (ERT). ERT is our EMS Response unit for main campus faculty, staff & students in Orem, Utah. ERT was born out of a need to ensure our personnel and students all received rapid emergency medical response while on our 524 acre campus. During its conception I began as the lead faculty oversight, training officer and liaison with the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Orem Fire & EMS. UVU ERT is a Licensed EMS response unit to render medical care until a transporting agency (Orem) arrives on campus. Currently as the Faculty Director for the Emergency Response Team (ERT) I handle the training officer role, licensing responsibilities, grant funding, and any other needed EMS function throughout the academic year. The UVU ERT is an active EMS response basic life support (BLS) unit. ERT allows the UVU students and engaged component for EMT/AEMT & Paramedic programs by allowing our students an opportunity to interact firsthand on EMS calls and interface with Orem Fire & EMS Rescue.  This can also be used for your Service Learning Project hours.
