  Welcome Statement

Hi everyone, my name is Dr. Ross Hagen. I grew up in Oklahoma and have been at UVU since 2010. In addition to my academic writing and teaching, I have recorded and performed a variety of different kinds of music over the years. Electric bass and guitar are my usual instruments, but I also enjoy messing around with old synthesizers and weirdo guitar pedals of all stripes.

 Education and Experience

I received my B.A.. in Music from Davidson College in North Carolina, and then got my M.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Musicology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I've been at UVU since 2010 and I've taught Music History I & II, Introduction to Music, American Popular Music, Introduction to World Music, and Modern Legacies.

My research interests include underground music scenes, black metal music, medievalism, and avant-garde music. I have published articles and reviews in a number of academic journals, edited volumes, and encyclopedias over the years, and am a regular presenter at international conferences. Recent publications include the edited volume Medievalism and Metal Music Studies: Throwing Down the Gauntlet Links to an external site. and a book on the Norwegian band Darkthrone's 1992 album A Blaze in the Northern Sky Links to an external site. for Bloomsbury's 33.3 Global series, and I am an Assistant Editor for the journal Metal Music Studies Links to an external site.. My current research project is a co-authored book on ritual music in Ásatrú religious practices.
